About the event

After the June 28, 1969, Stonewall Rebellion, a gay liberation revolution swept the world. At the movement’s beating heart were radical periodicals—this was pre-internet, pre-Instagram. You had to pick up a corded phone and actually read.

These publications were the network. On the East Coast, you had Come Out! and Fag Rag. In the Bay Area, Gay Sunshine. And how could you forget Vanguard magazine? An entire world of words—urgent, unruly, alive.

This blink-and-you-miss-it consciousness-raising (and lowering) Zoom webinar features pioneers Gary Alinder (Berkeley Gay Sunshine), Perry Brass (NYC Come Out!), Kevin McGirr (Boston Fag Rag), Martha Shelley (NYC Rat), and Allen Young (NYC Liberation News Service), and is moderated by August Bernadicou (The LGBTQ History Project).

These were the voices that refused to be erased—and they still have something to say. Join us and step back into a moment when print wasn’t just media, it was movement.
